Munster Bridges Rehabilitation

Description: This project consisted of the refurbishment of 22 bridges in rural locations, primarily in Clare, Limerick and Kerry. The majority of the bridges were masonry construction and the works required varied from bridge to bridge, with some requiring full reconstruction, sustantial masonry work, new deck construction, surfacing, road realignment etc. JCL pre-casted a number of bridge elements ourselves at our facility in Tipperary. Two of the structures (Listowel and Beallaclugga)were listed and required us to work with conservation architects.
Traffic management was a major element of the works with plans being designed and implemented for each location. Programming and management of the project were also challenging due to the short time frame and the spread out locations. Up to six structures were being worked on at any one time
The project was delivered to a very high standard within the short time frame
Hopes Bridge, Monasterevin
Client: Laois County Council

Description: This project consisted of the construction of a large bridge over the Cork-Dublin Railway line, outside Monasterevin. A substantial traffic maangement plan was put into operation as the existing road had to be closed for the duration.
Piling works and then reinforced earth walls were constructed prior to the large 32m long pre-cast concrete beams being lifted into place during a night time possession of the railway line. The bridge deck, parapets and approach roads were then constructed. The original bridge was also demolished, again during a night time possession.
Castleknock Quality Bus Corridor

Projected Completion Date: March 2011
Description: This project consists of the construction of 5km of new bus lanes and upgrade of all utilities over the entire length of the project.
JCL designed and implemented substantial traffic management plans for the works in advance of commencement on site. Utilities were upgraded, new road layouts and junctions created along with bus lane and footpath improvements. The entire length of the road was also resurfaced.
JCL successfully delivered the project on time and on budget, fulfilling the role of Contractor and PSCS
Abbeyshrule Canal, Bridge and Roadworks
Client: Waterways Ireland
Value: €2.15m

Description: This project carried out in Abbeyshrule, Co. Longford had a number of different elements. The main body consisted of the demolition of an existing bridge and full refurbishment of an old masonry arch bridge, and 500m of an approach road, to make the Grand Canal passable in the village. The canal had to be dammed for a large portion of the works, while the new harbour and docking area was constructed.
There were substantial piling and masonry subcontracts and JCL also fulfilled the role of PSCS
Togher Link Rd, Portlaoise

Description: This roads project was constructed for Laois County Council in the middle of Portlaoise. The works included construction of 400m of new road, including kerbing, footpaths ducting, drainage, etc
Tie-ins were also constructed at either end of the new road. JCL also fulfilled the role of PSCS for this project
Enfield Relief Road

Description: This bridge, which included beams 30m in length was constructed over both the canal and the railway line in Enfield. There was a large piling subcontract and the works also included the construction of a cattle underpass under the railway line, and the construction of approach ramps and roads.
Substantial liaision was required with the Client, Iarnrod Eireann and Waterways Ireland.
Annesley Bridge Refurbishment
Client: Dublin City Council

Description: This bridge, over the River Tolka in Fairview, is very heavily trafficked and was completely refurbished during this contract. A substantial traffic and pedestrian management plan was put into operation and the bridge beams strengthened and repaired and the bridge deck replaced, with the 4 lanes of traffic remaining open at all times.
JCL also fulfilled the role of PSCS for the contract.
Shaw Bridge, Kilcock
Client: Kildare County Council

Description: This contract involved the removal and replacement of a canal and railway bridge with vehicular traffic and rail traffic being uninterrupted for the duration of the contract, as well as urban renewal through Kilcock. The bridge was a 30m span and works were carried out in the canal and on the adjoining railway platforms.
Finglas Footbridge
Client: Fingal County Council

Description: This project involved the removal of the existing footbridge and replacing with a new steel footbridge over the N2 at Finglas. The works had to be carried out at short notice as the old bridge was struck by a passing lorry. A pedestrian and traffic management plan was put into play and JCL constructed the concrete columns while our subcontractor was fabricating the bridge.
The bridge itself was erected in one night
Tullow Footbridge
Client: Carlow County Council

Completion Date: July 2006
Description: This timber footbridge was constructed by JCL over the River Slaney in 2006. Concrete abutments, which were subsequently clad in stone, were constructed on either side of the bridge and the bridge, which was constructed in Holland, was installed over the river in one lift.
JCL constructed the bridge decking and approach boardwalks on site and also acted as PSCS.
Station Rd, Portmarnock

Description: This bridge was constructed for private Clients over the DART line adjacent to Portmarnock DART Station. The works invovled the widening of teh existing bridge and upgrades to the road, footpaths and cycle lanes.
Piling was required adjacent to the live tracks and was carried out at night. In total approximately 30 night time possesiosn were required to complete the works
Drinan Interchange

Description: Drinan Interchange is the largest bridge project that JCL have undertaken. It is a large bridge over the M1 Motorway near Swords. A full interchange was constructed, with roundabouts, ramps, cycle lanes and access roads, which tied in with existing roads.
A major feature of the project was that the motorway remained open for the duration of the project. A huge traffic management plan was designed and installed to cater for the 40,000 vehicles which use the roads on a daily basis
Ballycore Bridge

Description: This project, carried out for Kidare County Council, invovled the widening of an existing bridge and 200m of road construction and road realignment. The road was closed for the duration. JCL carried out the in-situ concrete works directly, with a specialist subcontractor installing the masonry
